Exhibition caseback explained
exhibition caseback
An exhibition caseback is a clear panel — usually sapphire — on the reverse of the watch that lets you see the movement while the watch is being worn or held.
What you are meant to see
Rotors, balance wheels, engraving, and finishing are part of the ownership experience for many mechanical watches. An exhibition back turns the movement into a visible design element. Solid casebacks can be stronger for hard tool use; exhibition backs prioritize theater and inspection.
What this means for buyers
If you care about mechanics, an open caseback can justify a recommendation. If you want maximum toughness or a vintage-correct solid back, say so in your brief — it changes the short list.
