Hacking seconds explained
hacking seconds
Hacking seconds (or a stop-seconds feature) means pulling the crown to set the time also stops the seconds hand — so you can sync the watch precisely to a reference signal.
Why it exists
Without hacking, the seconds hand keeps running while you set hours and minutes, making exact synchronization awkward. Military and precision-minded designs popularized the feature; most modern mechanicals include it.
Does it matter for buying?
Nice to have for pedants and travelers who care. Rarely a deal-breaker. Older or simpler movements may lack it; that alone does not make a watch bad — just less convenient to set to the second.
