Watch lume explained

watch lume

Lume is the glow-in-the-dark material on hands, markers, and sometimes bezels — charged by light, then emitting so you can read the watch in the dark.

Modern vs vintage

Modern luminous compounds (often Super-LumiNova and relatives) are non-radioactive and vary in brightness and color. Vintage radium and some tritium treatments have different safety and aging stories — collect with knowledge, do not sand old lume casually.

What to expect

Charge quality and pigment volume change how long a dial stays readable. Tool watches usually lume more aggressively than dress watches. Faded vintage lume can be charming or a restoration debate — disclose either way when buying pre-owned.
