Watch lume explained
watch lume
Lume is the glow-in-the-dark material on hands, markers, and sometimes bezels. It charges in light, then glows so you can read the watch in the dark.
Modern vs vintage
Modern lume (often Super-LumiNova and similar) isn't radioactive and varies in brightness and color. Vintage radium and some tritium lume age differently and carry different safety concerns. Know what you're handling, and never sand old lume casually.
What to expect
How much lume is applied, and its quality, decide how long the dial stays readable. Tool watches usually have far more than dress watches. Faded vintage lume can be charming or a restoration argument, and a seller should disclose it either way.
